Top Roping
Top-rope climbing, or top-roping, is a form of rock climbing where climbers are supported by a rope that runs up and down a rock face. The rope is threaded through a top-rope anchor at the top of the route, and it is controlled by a belayer standing on the ground beneath the climber.
Lead Climbing
Lead climbing indoors is very much like sport climbing outside, except that indoors the quickdraws are already in place. The challenge with lead climbing is that if you slip or miss the next quickdraw, you'll fall a short distance back to the previous clipped in point.
Bouldering
Bouldering is rock climbing stripped down to its raw essentials. Leaving behind ropes and harnesses and just using climbing shoes and a bag of chalk over safety mats, your challenge is to climb short but tricky bouldering "problems" (a route, or sequence of moves) using balance, technique, strength, and your brain.
Gear for Beginners
Climbing Shoes Climbing shoes are essential to starting the sport. They are designed to help you ascent the rock vertically with specific rubber made to stick to rock. Harness Climbing harnesses are required in order to safely climb up routes with a rope.

Rope A climbing rope is what keeps you safe. They are dynamic in that they stretch when brought under load which leads to softer falls when the time arises. My favorite brand is Sterling. Belay Device A belay device is used by the one belaying (not climbing) for managing the rope while the climber goes up, and keeps them safe from the ground. The picture shown here is called a gri gri and is one of the safest options.

Chalk Bag Chalk bags arent required but are very nice to have. They will become your bestfriend as your hands get sweaty, and your grip becomes slicker than normal. Brush Brushes are used for cleaning off the holds that have gotten gunked up with chalk and other debris to increase the friction. Not required to start climbing but are cheap and handy to have with you.
